Martin Luther King III and the Rev. Bernice King joined the governor at the Capitol Tuesday. Luther King III called it a great tribute to his father.
He says his hope is that it reminds people that there is still work to be done as far as civil rights.
How soon the statue will be erected and where it will be placed on Capitol grounds has yet to be decided. It will be paid for with private funds.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner was born in 1929 in Atlanta.
Last year, tens of thousands of people gathered on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to mark the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.
At the 1963 event, King gave his “I have a dream” speech.
