CLARKSTON, Ga. – The face of America is changing, with more people of color throughout the country, and more refugees and recent immigrants living in rural communities than many might expect.
In the PBS “Need to Know” Election Special “America by the Numbers,” Maria Hinojosa explores this demographic shift through the eyes of families in the small town of Clarkston, Georgia, USA.
Hinojosa looks at what it takes be inclusive, engaged and living in the New America, as well as what it takes for a community to welcome and embrace newcomers and new ways.

Clarkston today is home to thousands of refugees from Vietnam, Somalia, Iraq and Bhutan – along with some forty other countries.
Hinojosa offers viewers an intimate look at how changing demographics are reshaping the political and cultural landscape in America.
For 25 years, Hinojosa has helped tell America’s untold stories and brought to light unsung heroes. In 2010, Hinojosa launched The Futuro Media Group with the mission to produce multi-platform, community-based journalism that respects and celebrates the cultural richness of the American experience. She is the first Latina to anchor a Frontline report: “Lost in Detention” about deportation and immigration detention. The program aired in October 2011 and sparked public engagement and conversation from Capitol Hill to mainstream media to the Spanish language media.
The PBS “Need to Know” special with Maria Hinojosa will be broadcast Friday, Sept. 21.
